Immanuel Lutheran is a small, diverse, and active faith community who celebrates Christ’s abundant presence in our lives, neighborhood, and world.
And we mean it. Our building is located in the Cascade Neighborhood of South Lake Union, Seattle – but our community can be found living out our faith around Puget Sound, the nation, and beyond! (We affectionately refer to it as the Immanuel Diaspora).
We are an ELCA church, which means: We affiliate with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States.
We are a “Reconciling in Christ” congregation, which means:
- We welcome all persons – all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, races, ethnicities, ages, abilities, citizenships, and economic statuses – to worship with us, to receive God’s gift of grace at the communion table, and to participate fully in our community’s life, including membership and leadership.
- We strive to be an Anti-Racist community, realizing we are on an important journey as we move toward the destination of respecting and honoring people of all races.
We respectfully acknowledge that our church, Immanuel Lutheran, and many of the spaces where congregants live are on unceded Coast Salish land, specifically the ancestral land of the Duwamish, Suquamish, Stillaguamish, and Muckleshoot People. We recognize the stewardship of this land by the Coast Salish peoples since time immemorial, and the disruption of this work by colonization, a disruption that continues even today. We strive to remedy this injustice through our beliefs and transforming actions in and beyond our community. One of these actions is paying #RealRent to the Duwamish peoples.
We are an Advocating Congregation. As the ELCA likes to say, “God’s work, our hands.” For us this goes beyond direct service to include advocacy to restore and reconcile our world for the common good. Learn more about ELCA Advocacy, ELCA Social Statements and ELCA Social Messages.
At Immanuel, we particularly support efforts to end racism, sexism, homophobia, and xenophobia; advocate for equal rights for LGBTQIA+ folks; support immigrants and refugees; advocate for an end to homelessness and food insecurity; and stand with people affected by addiction, mental illness, physical disabilities, natural and human-made disasters, climate change, the incarceration and detention system, violence and war.
We take our partnership with folks in Recovery seriously. Many of our community members are in recovery, and we partner with Immanuel Community Services who hosts a recovery shelter in our building.
And we build community and nurture relationships within our congregation, in our neighborhood, and in our region.
We hope you are inspired to spend some time with us either online or in-person. We are all the more whole when you participate with us in the authenticity that is you! We conclude every children’s message with “God made you quirky and loves you a large amount.”
